On May 9th of this year Asian pop sensation Wonder Girls producer/choreagrapher J.Y. Park announced at the Festival of Media in Montreaux that the girl group would be making their first film titled Wonder Girls At The Apollo.
The Wonder Girls are the first Korean pop group to enter the top 100 Billboard charts in the U.S.
The premise of the film was to a battle of the bands between the Wonder Girls and Nick Cannon’s girl group The School Gyrls, taking place on the legendary Apollo stage in Harlem, NY. JYP also stated at the Festival that there is to be a joint album between the two groups.
According to a statement released by JYP Entertainment, Wonder Girls at the Apollo will now be a 6-part mini-series movie with the first episode set to air in the first quarter of 2012. Shooting is set to begin in October. JYP Entertainment and Nick Cannon’s company NCredible will co-produce the series and it will air on Teen Nick. Cannon is the Chairman of Teen Nick.
The Wonder Girls will also release their U.S. debut album to coincide with the first episode of Wonder Girls at the Apollo. The debut album will be in the form of a movie Official Soundtrack for the show.
Teen Nick, owned by Viacom/MTV , has more than 70 million regular viewers. Other stars that made appearances in Teen Nick movies include Drake, Miranda Cosgrove, Keke Palmer, and Victoria Justice.
