Nick Cannon Reflections
September 1, 2009 3 CommentsStarr Rhett who interviewed Nick for his recent BET.com interview reflects upon her conceptions of the man both before and after the interview.
Nick Cannon catches a lot of flack because people think he’s a cornball. I’m guilty of hating on him too. When he came out with “Gigolo,” I couldn’t believe what I was seeing or hearing but you have to respect the man’s grind (sorry to be cliche). I didn’t suspect there was anything more to him until one night, while at a party in New York City’s meat packing district, I saw that he was the DJ which intrigued me. I started doing my research and saw that Nick Cannon is quite the busy bee in front of the camera and behind the scenes. After that party, I started running into him at more events. Sometimes he was the DJ, other times he was just hanging out but he never had an entourage and he was always gracious and humble when people approached him for pictures or casual conversation.
I have since changed my opinion, but my recent interview with him for BET.com’s entertainment news section has really solidified my stance that Nick Cannon is probably one of the coolest and most talented celebrities out there. He’s about his business and even better, he knows he’s corny and is perfectly OK with that:
“People can call me corny because I’m gonna go to the corny bank and cash these corny checks [laughs]. I’ve been corny all my life and I’ve never had a problem with that. On the low, ladies love the corniness. They love dudes that can just be themselves. You gotta embrace who you are and have fun with it.”
Yep. That’s what he told me. Say what you want but he’s right. He has a deal with Axe Shower Gel, runs his own network, owns a record label, acts, produces (music and TV), directs and he’s working on several TV projects from sketch comedy to movies for networks like MTV, NBC and Teen Nick (which he runs). If I had those credentials, I’d be OK if people hated on me incessantly too. But anyway, my interview with Nick Cannon stands out as one of my favorite celebrity interviews. He answered all of my questions candidly, even the ones about Mariah (he joked that he wasn’t a “question dodger”). I wish I was able to have more time with him but such is life. Hopefully I’ll get to interview him again when he has accomplished even more.
