This week filming has begun for famed film director, producer, writer, and actor Spike Lee’s latest film currently titled “ChiRaq” in Chicago.
The premise of the film whose title has garnered plenty of controversy is still unknown. The title of the film comes from a nickname for the Illinois city given to it by residents for the level of death and violence that currently occurs there.
Monday which was the first day of shooting began in Chicago’s South Side and the neighborhood of Wicker Park.
Filming for today (Tuesday) is set for 4 a.m. to 11 p.m. around the Double Door music club, located at 1572 N. Milwaukee Ave., according to a flier posted outside the building.
“Chiraq” posters advertising a performance by rappers Terror Tee and Little Lelex were seen covering the window of Double Door with the hashtag #spartanboyzentertainment. The signs also feature a photo of Nick, who was spotted Monday taking a picture with young members of the South Side’s Crushers Club, a group that aims to be an alternative to gangs.
The filming prompted several parking restrictions in the area Monday through Wednesday.
The flier warns of “simulated gunfire during filming” between 10 a.m. and 10 p.m. Tuesday. The Chicago Police Department is expected to be on hand to notify local districts before the simulated shootings take place.
Filming will continue in the area tomorrow (Wednesday) from 5 a.m. to 5 p.m., according to the flier.
Over the weekend, Sen. Jacqueline Collins, sponsored a resolution to urge Illinois to find Lee’s production company eligible for a tax credit, said the company plans to hire nearly 3,000 extras, 100 crew members and 20 interns this summer and most will be residents of the city’s Englewood neighborhood.
Below are behind the scene snaps of Nick and some of the other cast which includes Wesley Snipes and John Cusack during the table read for the film and snapshots of him with fans and the posters outside the club.
