The School Gyrls: Up Close and Personal!

Monday, February 15th, 2010

You’ve probably seen them on magazine covers and TV spots. Showman supreme Nick Cannon, who is now chairman of the TeenNick network, put together three talented teen girls and has directed them in a spunky, fresh and dance club worthy TV movie called “School Gyrls”, a musical set in an all girls’ school (don’t worry, the boys’ school next door shares the quad).

Bambi, the meangirl diva, is out to get our heroines and humungous hall monitor Daisy keeps them in line….sorta. The hottie to land is adorable quarterback, budding musician Colin and the game is on to best Bambi and her meangirl crew at the TeenIsland stunt party.

Catch the “School Gyrls” TV movie on TeenNick on February 21st followed by Nick Cannon’s cool pic Drumline. The gyrls’ song “Something Like a Party” is all over the net and their first album “School Gyrls” will hit stores and be online on March 23rd on the Def Jam label.

We are with the gyrls now at Nick’s NCredible production offices in Studio City, California. The 15 and 16-year old triple threats (sing, dance, act) are Jacque Pyles (character is Jacque Nimble), Monica Parales (Mo-Money/Monica) and Mandy Moseley (Mandy Rain) and they are pint-sized pistols full of energy and charm. We had a great gurl-chat!

What’s it like to be directed by hot Nick Cannon? How fun was it to hang out with gueststars Justin Bieber, Soulja Boy and many more? How do the girls handle haters? Who are their celeb crushes and who would they kill to share a stage with some day? We’ve got all the inside answers…

Q: After you all got the parts, did you meet to hang out to bond and get to know each other?

Jacque: When I first met (the other girls) I had already known of them. I met Monica at a Macy’s Passport (fashion extravaganza) before I auditioned for “The School Gyrls” and I’d seen Mandy at Millennium Dance Complex. So, when we got together it was kind of like we knew of each other. First time we actually hung out was at the studio when we recorded a song.

I auditioned on a Friday and Sunday is when we met at Nick Cannon’s house. We got to meet his wife Mariah. I thought it was a call-back but he was telling us all about what the School Gyrls were gonna do; ‘We’re gonna do a movie and by this time next year you girls won’t even be able to go to the mall’. That’s when we learned about what would happen.

Q: Pretty awesome being at Nick’s and also meeting Mariah! How was working with Nick Cannon as your director? Was he strict or fun or both? (more…)

Nick Cannon rocks The Underground

Sunday, February 14th, 2010

It might not have made sense to some people when Nick Cannon added New York morning radio host to his résumé last month — the actor/comedian/rapper/television producer/“America’s Got Talent” host/Mariah Carey-husband seems to have enough slashes to his name — but it makes perfect sense to the 29-year-old entrepreneur.

“It’s a media I’ve always admired,” said Cannon, who sported a Sinatra-like fedora, tie and vest to his deejay appearance at The Underground (56 W. Illinois St.) Saturday. “And I get up early anyway — I might as well do work. I don’t ever sleep.”

Besides his new gig with 92.3 NOW (WXRK-FM) in New York, Cannon, in town for Carey’s two shows at the Chicago Theatre, is promoting RydazNrtist, an R&B group signed to his Ncredible Entertainment label. He also wrote and directed “School Gyrls,” a “High School Musical”-esque film which premieres Feb. 21 on Nickelodeon.

When asked about his next film role, Cannon said, “It’s a musical – that’s all I can say about that.” The “Drumline” star claimed he’s a little more careful when picking movie roles these days because he doesn’t want to make the same mistakes he made in the past.

“Before I was doing movies for money,” Cannon said. “I just wanted to get paid and pay my parents bills. The reason I do movies now is for the love of it.”

As for the follow-up to his 2003 self-titled debut rap album, which featured the underrated “Gigolo,” Cannon said nothing is in the works.

Still, he did admit to writing a few rap songs about Carey’s nemesis, Eminem, who has taken numerous swipes at Mrs. Nick Cannon.

“I wrote a bunch of dis records but never put them out,” said Cannon before jokingly bragging, “I killed him.”

Big Time Rush, Nickelodeons latest hot new show and musical sensation has just shot a promo with Mr. Teen Nick Chairman himself. The concept isn’t completely known yet but it seems as if the guys wind up goofing off in Nick’s office. Whatever the final product, no doubt it’ll be a stone winner.

Big Time Rush

Life is about to change big time for four best friends from Minnesota. One day they’re playing hockey and trying to pass math, and the next they’re on their way to L.A. to become the newest pop sensation. It may seem like a dream, but trading hockey sticks for hair and make-up isn’t always easy. Do they have what it takes to make it in the music biz? Will celebrity life change them for ever? And where will they practice their flip shots anyway?

Inside the Crazy Life & Booming Business of Nick Cannon

Saturday, February 6th, 2010

Nick Cannon firmly believes in the power of positive thinking. Ask the 29-year-old how is various achievements came about—successful stand-up-comic at 15 years old, staff writer for Nickelodeon’s All That and Kenan & Kel at 17, CEO of his own production company NCredible, chairman of the TeenNick cable network, host of NBC’s America’s Got Talent and a daily radio show, and loving husband to one of the most famous women in the world—and he’ll tell you he willed them to happen by telling the Universe what he wanted.

“I truly believe in speaking things into existence,” says Cannon. “Not to get all Tony Robbins, but you speak it, and it can definitely happen to you.”  It may sound like so much New Age hokum, but it seems to be working.  After  garnering fame on Nickelodeon, Cannon landed a breakout role in 2002’s sleeper-hit Drumline. He was labeled the next Will Smith, but his follow-up films (2003’s Love Don’t Cost a Thing, 2005’s Underclassman) flopped. Rather than falling into straight-to-DVD obscurity, however, the former It boy has embarked on one of the more surprising second acts in entertainment industry. /meet Nick Canon: mini-mogul. “He could almost be a combo of Jay-Z, Dick Clark, and David Geffen,” says MTV’s President of Programming Tony DiSanto. Adding to his public profile, of course, his marriage to Mariah Carey, whom Cannon calls an “angel”. Says Carey, “He is probably the only person I know that matches me in drive and ambition.” And Cannon couldn’t be happier with phase 2 of his career. “‘I’m past my stage of wanting to be a star,” he admits, sitting behind his desk at TeenNick’s Times Square offices. “To be honest, I’ve always made more money behind the scenes.” (more…)

Nickelodeon Presents a Night of Nick Cannon

Wednesday, February 3rd, 2010

TeenNick Chairman Nick Cannon takes the helm behind and in front of the camera as Nickelodeon presents two back-to-back movie premieres featuring the multi-talented entertainer, on Sunday, Feb. 21. Cannon makes his movie directorial debut with School Gyrls, a new hour-long original musical comedy, which he also penned, premiering at 7 p.m. (ET/PT) and stars in the network’s premiere of the popular theatrical film Drumline, at 8 p.m. (ET/PT).

“School Gyrls introduces the multi-talented Mandy Rain, Jacque and Monica to the teen audience,” said Nick Cannon, Chairman, TeenNick. “The girls are triple threats — each with their own amazing individual personalities – and Nickelodeon viewers will get an inside look at their road to fame in this movie.”

School Gyrls centers on the eponymous, real-life, multi-talented teen pop group discovered by Cannon consisting of 15-year old Mandy Rain; 15-year-old Jacquelyn Rae Pyles aka Jacque Nimble; and 16-year-old Monica Parales aka Mo Money. The TV movie also features guest appearances by Justin Bieber, Cannon, Kristinia DeBarge, Reverend Run, Soulja Boy, Angie Stone and Pete Wentz. School Gyrls marks Cannon’s second project for Nickelodeon and comes on the heels of the TeenNick HALO Awards, an hour-long special he created, hosted and executive produced, that recognizes and celebrates real teens who are making a significant difference in the world.

School Gyrls follows the adventures of three freshmen at Summerdale Academy, an exclusive all-girls boarding school. Mandy Rain, Jacque and Monica love to sing and dance, but have very different individual personalities. Fate unites the girls at school and they join forces forming an unlikely and unexpected friendship. The trio enters the Teen Island stunt party, where they find themselves battling it out with the reigning champions and resident mean girls: the sophomore cheerleaders.

“Nick Cannon’s creative vision as Chairman of TeenNick has come to life, first with the TeenNick HALO Awards and now with his directorial debut — School Gyrls,” said Marjorie Cohn, Executive Vice President, Original Programming and Development, Nickelodeon. “School Gyrls really showcases Nick’s knowledge of the teen demo with his discovery of these three relatable and gifted girls whose talents can live across multiple platforms.”

Drumline is a dramatic comedy that spotlights the world of university marching bands. Devon Miles (Cannon) is a Harlem teenager who receives a full scholarship to attend Atlanta A&T University based on his excellent percussion talents. However, making the transition from hip-hop street drumming to the drumline of the school’s legendary marching band is more challenging than he expected.

The premiere of School Gyrls will coincide with the release of a brand-new multimedia book series from Simon & Schuster Children’s Division as well as the release of a debut album and a musical tour by the pop trio. Kicking off the School Gyrls book series is a movie novelization that will be published in this month by Simon Spotlight, an imprint of Simon & Schuster Children’s Publishing. Aladdin Books will publish six original novels based on the three girls. Additionally, the School Gyrls, signed to Cannon’s NCredible Entertainment, will also embark on a 10-week cross-country tour with Cannon in spring 2010 timed to the March 23 release of their debut album on Island Records. The first single off the album, “Something Like a Party” will be available for sale digitally on Feb. 9. Cannon has also partnered with Archie Comics to introduce the School Gyrls into their iconic comic book series, with the cartoon characterization of the girls being introduced into Archie issue #607 which will hit newsstands nationwide on March 24 and be available for download on iTunes and Archie Digital.

School Gyrls not only look the part of sweet high school students, they actually are. Consisting of Mandy Rain, Jacque (pronounced “Jackie”), and Monica, the three young pop stars have major charisma and talent. Under the guidance of Nick Cannon, the group officially formed in November 2008 and have been hard at work ever since. They made their television debut as the School Gyrls with Nick Cannon on the season finale of E!’s TV show Party Monsters in Cabo San Lucas in January 2009 and have been busy recording their forthcoming debut album. Though barely old enough to drive, these young ladies are seasoned professionals with over twenty years of acting, singing and dancing experience combined. All are professionally trained triple threats and have each appeared in countless print and TV ad campaigns, music videos and performed as dancers for a variety of live stage shows. At the heart of all of it though, they are still sassy teenage girls who share a love for shopping, fashion and roller coasters.

Nick Cannon…The Ncredible

Nick Cannon Interview With The Cost Magazine from TheCostMag.com on Vimeo.

It seems as if we aren’t aware that Nick Cannon will soon be taking over every facet of entertainment known to man.

And that’s the way I think he likes it.

It’s rare that you’ll find Mr. Cannon without an immaculately-tailored suit on his trim, six-foot frame these days, as he spends a majority of his time as chairman of the television network, TeenNick. And it was a homecoming of sorts for Cannon, as he started his career with Nickelodeon as a teen comic sensation, eventually working his way around the boardrooms to establish his name as a sure-fire brand for quality entertainment. His successful MTV show, “Wild’n Out,” re-invented the sketch comedy genre and gave it a millennial twist with a hip-hop braggadocio. Bottom line, Cannon’s success with creating material for Viacom, one of the world’s largest media corporations, has made him a true force in today’s media circles.

Thankfully, Cannon’s business acumen hasn’t taken away from his passion for acting. With the ability to switch gears from his comfortable terrain of comedy (“Love Don’t Cost a Thing,” “Underclassmen”) to the dramatic (“Bobby,” “American Son”), the thespian’s talents are truly endless. But all of the young mogul’s accomplishments were the vehicle for the creation of one of the most unique combination of teenage ambition and goodwill that has been screened for television. The HALO (Helping And Leading Others) Awards recognizes extraordinary young people using their specific gifts to change the circumstances of the people and the world that surrounds them. The HALO Awards ceremony aired last month on TeenNick, but Cannon wants the movement to go beyond an annual event and become an experience that inspires everyone to contribute to the idea of empowerment.

With his marriage to the beautiful singer Mariah Carey being an obsession for noisy tabloid sites, and the creation of his corporation, Ncredible Entertainment, becoming an entity in the new world of media, Nick Cannon still remains a humble pioneer who has seen countless things in his 30 years of life. But even though he’s humble, you still have to respect his conglomerate.
