Nick Cannon Wild’s Out with The Inferno

Saturday, March 20th, 2010

With numerous accomplishments since childhood and a new position as radio VJ on the 92.3 NOW music station in New York, Nick Cannon has earned his place among the Top 10 Most Successful Young People in Hollywood. Recently, the Inferno had a conference call with the former Wild ‘N Out host to discuss the married life, music and success.

Inferno: How would you personally define “success?”
Nick Cannon: Success is a journey; it isn’t a destination because you don’t necessarily have to make it somewhere. For me, it’s a way of life; you have to live your life successfully.

Inferno: What was your initial reaction after finding out you were part of the “Top 10 Most Successful Young People in Hollywood” list?
NC:
I was stoked! I thought it was rigged. But it was just one of those things where people give you accolades and you have to humbly accept. I didn’t let it get to my head and stop my grind ’cause now I gotta be the number 1 most successfully young person in Hollywood.

Inferno: Growing up, what caught your interest first: music, comedy or acting?
NC:
It’s a toss up between music and comedy. I was always the class clown and the kid with a lot of energy. But music was my first love and passion. My grandfather was a great musician so I kind of got that from him.

Inferno: Who or what inspires you?
NC:
To this day, people in my family continue to inspire me. Also, I’ve always looked up to guys like Quincy Jones, Will Smith, Russell Simmons and Diddy and drew inspiration from them.

Inferno: Who are some actors and musicians you’d love to work with?
NC:
I always wanted to work with Denzel Washington and music wise, I’d love to work with Stevie Wonder and Alicia Keys.

Inferno: What was the creative process for Wild n’ Out?
NC:
I was just hanging out in a comedy club with my friends and they said, “Yo Nick! Why won’t you get us a job?” We are always joking around, like you see on the show and so I thought to myself, “This is the show right here!” And from there, I put it together.

Inferno: Could you discuss your multimedia company, NCredible Entertainment, a bit?
NC:
NCredible Entertaintment was a 360-degree idea where we’d be able to operate on all levels of entertainment: film, music, branding and marketing. A one-stop shop that takes an idea and expands on it on all different levels.

Inferno: How did your hosting gig on 92.3 FM, here in NYC, come about?
NC:
Well, I’ve always been a fan of radio and every time I’d do interviews on the radio, people would tell me that I should do radio and 92.3 approached me and gave me the opportunity.

Inferno: How did you become chairman of TeenNick?
NC:
I’ve always said that at some point, I’m [going to] run Nickelodeon. And one day, I went into the office and asked for my own network. I gave a presentation of my idea and told them, “If Oprah can have her own network, I want my own network too!” I also told them that I could run the teen channel better than anybody because I know and understand this particular demographic. And after the presentation, they agreed and gave me the network.

Inferno: What’s your favorite project that you’ve worked on so far?
NC:
I’d have to say Wild n’ Out.

Inferno: What are some projects or new ventures we can expect from you this year?
NC:
I’ll be working with musicians that are a part of my company label and I also got a new hip-hop reality show on MTV called Son of a Gun which stars rapper, Cory Gunz. Also, Wild n’ Out will be coming back for new seasons.

Inferno: Briefly, how did you and Mariah Carey meet? And have there been any talks of a music collaboration?
NC:
In interviews, people have always asked me who my celebrity crush was and I’d always tell them Mariah Carey, and after she heard that, we got in contact and linked up. As for a collabo, we’ve talked about it but I don’t feel I’m worthy enough to be in the studio with Mariah Carey.

Inferno: What is one thing your fans don’t know about you that they should know?
NC:
[I've] got a black belt; Eminem watch out!

The School Gyrls: Up Close and Personal!

Monday, February 15th, 2010

You’ve probably seen them on magazine covers and TV spots. Showman supreme Nick Cannon, who is now chairman of the TeenNick network, put together three talented teen girls and has directed them in a spunky, fresh and dance club worthy TV movie called “School Gyrls”, a musical set in an all girls’ school (don’t worry, the boys’ school next door shares the quad).

Bambi, the meangirl diva, is out to get our heroines and humungous hall monitor Daisy keeps them in line….sorta. The hottie to land is adorable quarterback, budding musician Colin and the game is on to best Bambi and her meangirl crew at the TeenIsland stunt party.

Catch the “School Gyrls” TV movie on TeenNick on February 21st followed by Nick Cannon’s cool pic Drumline. The gyrls’ song “Something Like a Party” is all over the net and their first album “School Gyrls” will hit stores and be online on March 23rd on the Def Jam label.

We are with the gyrls now at Nick’s NCredible production offices in Studio City, California. The 15 and 16-year old triple threats (sing, dance, act) are Jacque Pyles (character is Jacque Nimble), Monica Parales (Mo-Money/Monica) and Mandy Moseley (Mandy Rain) and they are pint-sized pistols full of energy and charm. We had a great gurl-chat!

What’s it like to be directed by hot Nick Cannon? How fun was it to hang out with gueststars Justin Bieber, Soulja Boy and many more? How do the girls handle haters? Who are their celeb crushes and who would they kill to share a stage with some day? We’ve got all the inside answers…

Q: After you all got the parts, did you meet to hang out to bond and get to know each other?

Jacque: When I first met (the other girls) I had already known of them. I met Monica at a Macy’s Passport (fashion extravaganza) before I auditioned for “The School Gyrls” and I’d seen Mandy at Millennium Dance Complex. So, when we got together it was kind of like we knew of each other. First time we actually hung out was at the studio when we recorded a song.

I auditioned on a Friday and Sunday is when we met at Nick Cannon’s house. We got to meet his wife Mariah. I thought it was a call-back but he was telling us all about what the School Gyrls were gonna do; ‘We’re gonna do a movie and by this time next year you girls won’t even be able to go to the mall’. That’s when we learned about what would happen.

Q: Pretty awesome being at Nick’s and also meeting Mariah! How was working with Nick Cannon as your director? Was he strict or fun or both? (more…)

Nick Cannon rocks The Underground

Sunday, February 14th, 2010

It might not have made sense to some people when Nick Cannon added New York morning radio host to his résumé last month — the actor/comedian/rapper/television producer/“America’s Got Talent” host/Mariah Carey-husband seems to have enough slashes to his name — but it makes perfect sense to the 29-year-old entrepreneur.

“It’s a media I’ve always admired,” said Cannon, who sported a Sinatra-like fedora, tie and vest to his deejay appearance at The Underground (56 W. Illinois St.) Saturday. “And I get up early anyway — I might as well do work. I don’t ever sleep.”

Besides his new gig with 92.3 NOW (WXRK-FM) in New York, Cannon, in town for Carey’s two shows at the Chicago Theatre, is promoting RydazNrtist, an R&B group signed to his Ncredible Entertainment label. He also wrote and directed “School Gyrls,” a “High School Musical”-esque film which premieres Feb. 21 on Nickelodeon.

When asked about his next film role, Cannon said, “It’s a musical – that’s all I can say about that.” The “Drumline” star claimed he’s a little more careful when picking movie roles these days because he doesn’t want to make the same mistakes he made in the past.

“Before I was doing movies for money,” Cannon said. “I just wanted to get paid and pay my parents bills. The reason I do movies now is for the love of it.”

As for the follow-up to his 2003 self-titled debut rap album, which featured the underrated “Gigolo,” Cannon said nothing is in the works.

Still, he did admit to writing a few rap songs about Carey’s nemesis, Eminem, who has taken numerous swipes at Mrs. Nick Cannon.

“I wrote a bunch of dis records but never put them out,” said Cannon before jokingly bragging, “I killed him.”

Inside the Crazy Life & Booming Business of Nick Cannon

Saturday, February 6th, 2010

Nick Cannon firmly believes in the power of positive thinking. Ask the 29-year-old how is various achievements came about—successful stand-up-comic at 15 years old, staff writer for Nickelodeon’s All That and Kenan & Kel at 17, CEO of his own production company NCredible, chairman of the TeenNick cable network, host of NBC’s America’s Got Talent and a daily radio show, and loving husband to one of the most famous women in the world—and he’ll tell you he willed them to happen by telling the Universe what he wanted.

“I truly believe in speaking things into existence,” says Cannon. “Not to get all Tony Robbins, but you speak it, and it can definitely happen to you.”  It may sound like so much New Age hokum, but it seems to be working.  After  garnering fame on Nickelodeon, Cannon landed a breakout role in 2002’s sleeper-hit Drumline. He was labeled the next Will Smith, but his follow-up films (2003’s Love Don’t Cost a Thing, 2005’s Underclassman) flopped. Rather than falling into straight-to-DVD obscurity, however, the former It boy has embarked on one of the more surprising second acts in entertainment industry. /meet Nick Canon: mini-mogul. “He could almost be a combo of Jay-Z, Dick Clark, and David Geffen,” says MTV’s President of Programming Tony DiSanto. Adding to his public profile, of course, his marriage to Mariah Carey, whom Cannon calls an “angel”. Says Carey, “He is probably the only person I know that matches me in drive and ambition.” And Cannon couldn’t be happier with phase 2 of his career. “‘I’m past my stage of wanting to be a star,” he admits, sitting behind his desk at TeenNick’s Times Square offices. “To be honest, I’ve always made more money behind the scenes.” (more…)
