Nick Cannon Wild’s Out with The Inferno

Saturday, March 20th, 2010

With numerous accomplishments since childhood and a new position as radio VJ on the 92.3 NOW music station in New York, Nick Cannon has earned his place among the Top 10 Most Successful Young People in Hollywood. Recently, the Inferno had a conference call with the former Wild ‘N Out host to discuss the married life, music and success.

Inferno: How would you personally define “success?”
Nick Cannon: Success is a journey; it isn’t a destination because you don’t necessarily have to make it somewhere. For me, it’s a way of life; you have to live your life successfully.

Inferno: What was your initial reaction after finding out you were part of the “Top 10 Most Successful Young People in Hollywood” list?
NC:
I was stoked! I thought it was rigged. But it was just one of those things where people give you accolades and you have to humbly accept. I didn’t let it get to my head and stop my grind ’cause now I gotta be the number 1 most successfully young person in Hollywood.

Inferno: Growing up, what caught your interest first: music, comedy or acting?
NC:
It’s a toss up between music and comedy. I was always the class clown and the kid with a lot of energy. But music was my first love and passion. My grandfather was a great musician so I kind of got that from him.

Inferno: Who or what inspires you?
NC:
To this day, people in my family continue to inspire me. Also, I’ve always looked up to guys like Quincy Jones, Will Smith, Russell Simmons and Diddy and drew inspiration from them.

Inferno: Who are some actors and musicians you’d love to work with?
NC:
I always wanted to work with Denzel Washington and music wise, I’d love to work with Stevie Wonder and Alicia Keys.

Inferno: What was the creative process for Wild n’ Out?
NC:
I was just hanging out in a comedy club with my friends and they said, “Yo Nick! Why won’t you get us a job?” We are always joking around, like you see on the show and so I thought to myself, “This is the show right here!” And from there, I put it together.

Inferno: Could you discuss your multimedia company, NCredible Entertainment, a bit?
NC:
NCredible Entertaintment was a 360-degree idea where we’d be able to operate on all levels of entertainment: film, music, branding and marketing. A one-stop shop that takes an idea and expands on it on all different levels.

Inferno: How did your hosting gig on 92.3 FM, here in NYC, come about?
NC:
Well, I’ve always been a fan of radio and every time I’d do interviews on the radio, people would tell me that I should do radio and 92.3 approached me and gave me the opportunity.

Inferno: How did you become chairman of TeenNick?
NC:
I’ve always said that at some point, I’m [going to] run Nickelodeon. And one day, I went into the office and asked for my own network. I gave a presentation of my idea and told them, “If Oprah can have her own network, I want my own network too!” I also told them that I could run the teen channel better than anybody because I know and understand this particular demographic. And after the presentation, they agreed and gave me the network.

Inferno: What’s your favorite project that you’ve worked on so far?
NC:
I’d have to say Wild n’ Out.

Inferno: What are some projects or new ventures we can expect from you this year?
NC:
I’ll be working with musicians that are a part of my company label and I also got a new hip-hop reality show on MTV called Son of a Gun which stars rapper, Cory Gunz. Also, Wild n’ Out will be coming back for new seasons.

Inferno: Briefly, how did you and Mariah Carey meet? And have there been any talks of a music collaboration?
NC:
In interviews, people have always asked me who my celebrity crush was and I’d always tell them Mariah Carey, and after she heard that, we got in contact and linked up. As for a collabo, we’ve talked about it but I don’t feel I’m worthy enough to be in the studio with Mariah Carey.

Inferno: What is one thing your fans don’t know about you that they should know?
NC:
[I've] got a black belt; Eminem watch out!

Portland’s Got Talent

Saturday, March 20th, 2010

High school groups, cheerleaders, girlfriends enjoying an out-of-the ordinary afternoon outing, a guy dressed as Ozzy Osbourne  – they were all in the crowd that came to Keller Auditorium  on a sunny Thursday afternoon to watch a taping of the NBC show, “America’s Got Talent.”

The TV talent competition was in town to tape performances by singers, magicians, dancers, bands and others who made it through local auditions held Feb. 28-March 1.  The “America’s Got Talent” cast – host Nick Cannon  and judges Piers Morgan,  Sharon Osbourne  and Howie Mandel  – are traveling around the country taping shows before live audiences through March and April. The tour started in Los Angeles March 12-13,  and then came to Portland. The show, a summer ratings hit for NBC, returns for its fifth season June 1.

While it’s produced by the company behind “American Idol,” “America’s Got Talent” is more democratic than its ratings-juggernaut sibling. Unlike “American Idol,” “America’s Got Talent” is open to all ages, and welcomes variety acts of any kind – ventriloquists, comedians, contortionists, and anything else you can think of, who compete for a $1 million prize.

Variety was definitely in the mix on the Keller stage Thursday afternoon, during the third of the show’s four Portland tapings. Before the show, crew members told the audience how to boisterously register their likes and dislikes – standing up, cheering, booing, making hand gestures to signal a contestant should be booted, and shouting “Vegas! Vegas! Vegas!” for ones they liked.

Then the judges came out, to thunderous applause. As they took their seats, facing the stage, Morgan displayed a souvenir someone gave him after the Wednesday taping – a “KEEP PORTLAND WEIRD” bumper-sticker.

Cannon asked the judges, “Is Portland weird to you?”

“It absolutely is,” said Osbourne. “But I love it!”

View full sizeRoss William Hamilton/The OregonianJill Fjeldman of Talent, Oregon, sang and danced while on three stilts. The afternoon’s would-be stars included Rachel Nedrow,  a 14-year-old  whose talent is stacking cups. The slim teen-ager stood at a table and stacked orange and green cups into pyramids, to the loud accompaniment of the song, “Maniac.”  The stage behind her was decorated in red-white-and-blue. Above the stage were three huge X’s, each with a judge’s name. Each judge has a button they can press when they don’t want an act to keep going; when they press it, the judge’s X lights up in red.

Morgan’s X lighted up as Nedrow dropped a cup. When she completed her act, Morgan asked: “Tell me the name of the most famous cup stacker in the world.” Nedrow knew who it was. Nevertheless, Morgan wasn’t convinced the larger audience was starving for cup-stacking acts.

Mandel, who takes over as judge this season for David Hasselhoff, was more supportive. “Piers, you don’t do this to children,” Mandel said.

Osbourne suggested Nedrow could increase the showmanship factor, maybe with “some bejeweling of the cups.”

Others trying their luck were hip-hop dancers from the Bay Area, a Bollywood-style dance troupe, and a septuagenarian harmonica player named Pierre.

Also on hand were performers from auditions held in Talent, the town in Southern Oregon. Morgan seemed amazed. “Is there really a town called Talent?” the British judge asked.

Talent’s Jeremy VanSchoonhoven  did a trick bicycle-riding act, lifting up the front wheels while hopping from platform to platform on the bike. The audience was as raucous as a Jerry Springer crowd, fist-pumping, screaming, “Vegas!” and acting very un-Portlandlike in their full-throated hollering.

Judges, from left, Piers Morgan, Sharon Osbourne and Howie Mandel were in town to give their takes on the competitors.Mandel noted that VanSchoonhoven fell at one point, with the bicycle seat perilously close to a vulnerable spot between his legs: “There was drama, there was thrill, and your friend almost ended up with nil.”

The talent from Talent kept coming: a woman who performed ballet while balancing on three stilts; and a young woman who hung from a trapeze while singing a song she wrote for a musical about the rain forest. At that, someone in the audience muttered, “Uh, oh.”

During a break, Layne Fish, 58,  observed, “It doesn’t seem like they have a whole lot of talent.” The pastor of Vancouver Vineyard Church  said her daughter auditioned, but didn’t make the cut.

Who from the Portland taping did the judges vote through to the next round? We can’t spoil the surprise. But the competition is far from over. “America’s Got Talent” next goes to Dallas, Texas; Orlando, Fla.; New York City; and Chicago.

School Gyrls talk to Girls Life

Saturday, March 13th, 2010

Detention’s a drag, isn’t it? No talking, no eating, no sleeping…no fun! But how do you make it fun? Get stuck in there with your two besties and make a plan to take down the queen bee of the school!

Actually – don’t. Being good tends to pay off, unless you’re in the new Nickelodeon movie School Gyrls – premiering Sunday, February 21!

The movie is based on the new girl group School Gyrls. It features three super-talented chicks: Mandy Rain, Jacque (pronounced “Jackie”) Rae Pyles and Monica Parales. And with such talented vocals from each, we just know you’ll love ‘em.

We managed to catch up with Jacque and Monica, and got them to spill on their past as well as the School Gyrls’ future!

Describe [your] favorite experience from filming the School Gyrls movie.
Jacque: I have a lot of great experiences from filming the movie. I would say probably the fact that I got to make such amazing friends, and being able to work with such amazing people [like] Mandy, Monica and Nick Cannon!

Monica: My favorite experience from filming was the whole process! Meeting great people and just working with people your age. We had soo much fun learning and memorizing dance routines, lyrics and lines.

Have you ever experienced detention in real life?
Jacque: I have experienced detention in real life, actually a couple times! Ha! Because of little things [like] not getting my work in on time, or dress code, but it was never anything serious like back talk or fighting or anything!

Monica: The only time I was in detention was when the whole class had it. That one time was because most of the students forged their parents’ signatures on their own Home Reading Clubs, which was like a log for each time you would read.

What’s your favorite thing to do with the other girls in your down time?
Jacque: My favorite thing to do with the gyrls is probably just chill out and Ustream with fans, or dance, or go shopping!

Monica: My favorite thing to do with the girls on my downtime is just chill, eat and talk with them about anything – and also shopping!

What’s your favorite song on your iPod right now? What about the most embarrassing?
Jacque: Well, I don’t really have a favorite song, but I would have to say my favorite album at the moment is We Are Young Money! As for an embarrassing song? I am not embarrassed of any of the songs on there!

Monica: My favorite song on my iPod right now is “Rude Boy” by Rihanna. The most embarrassing would be “It’s Raining Men.”

If you could collaborate musically with any artist right now, who would it be and why?
Jacque: If I could collab with any artists, I would say Young Money or Trey Songz! I think it would be amazing to have Young Money on a track because their rapping with our singing would just be dope! As for Trey Songz, he is my singer celeb crush!

Monica: Well, I’ve already had the chance to work with the most beautiful and talented Mariah Carey, which I am soo blessed for. If there was anyone else, I would say Alicia Keys. I love her music also.

Growing up, were there any girl groups you totally loved or look towards for inspiration?
Jacque: Um, well of course I looked up to the Spice Girls! I use[d] to watch their movie over and over and over. I think when it came out I knew all the lines of the movie word for word! And their tour bus?! My gosh I always wanted one! Hah, but I really looked up to Destiny’s Child and still do, to this day!

Monica: When I was growing up there were a looot of girl groups that I was into [like] the Spice Girls, Eden’s Crush, SWV, 702, Destiny’s Child and my favorite of all time – TLC.

Nick & Mariah: The Movie

Saturday, March 13th, 2010

Nick Cannon wants to make a film with Mariah Carey.

The rapper-and-presenter claims his spouse is the funniest person he knows and he would love for them to show off her comedic talents in a joint venture.

He said: “I’d love to do a film with Mariah. But it would have to be a comedy. She’s the funniest woman in the world, she just cracks me up all the time.”

Mariah’s most recent big screen outing was as a dowdy social worker in ‘Precious: Based on the Novel ‘Push’ by Sapphire’ and she admits she felt “tortured” by the role, although she believes it has made her a better person.

She said: “It was definitely a commitment to be seen looking that bad. I love Lee Daniels, the director, but he’s a sick man. He wanted to torture me.

“But you know, it freed me in a lot of ways. I don’t worry about certain things in the same way any more.”

Nick let’s Mariah’s “Big Surprise” out the bag

Friday, March 12th, 2010

Mariah Carey sure knows how to stir the pot.

The 39-year-old diva sent bloggers into a frenzy when she teased on the Oscars red carpet that she has “something special on the way.” Of course that means she’s preggers, right?

We caught up with Carey’s other half, Nick Cannon, who let us in on a little secret…

“It’s funny because the big surprise has to do with Home Shopping Network or something like that,” Cannon revealed at the Stars & Strikes Fundraiser supporting APCH at PINZ in Studio City. “She has a new product coming out. It has nothing to do with kids.”

Mimi may not have a bun in the oven just yet, but that doesn’t mean it won’t happen soon. “We would have a beautiful baby, wouldn’t we?” Cannon said. “We’re laying the foundation right now. We just got a home out here and all that stuff, and Mariah just came off tour, so we’ll see what happens.”

In the meantime, the sexy songbird and her hubby are just enjoying married life. “What people don’t understand is Mariah has the funniest sense of humor ever,” Cannon gushed. “She’s hilarious. We always have a good time.”
