Inside the Crazy Life & Booming Business of Nick Cannon

Saturday, February 6th, 2010

Nick Cannon firmly believes in the power of positive thinking. Ask the 29-year-old how is various achievements came about—successful stand-up-comic at 15 years old, staff writer for Nickelodeon’s All That and Kenan & Kel at 17, CEO of his own production company NCredible, chairman of the TeenNick cable network, host of NBC’s America’s Got Talent and a daily radio show, and loving husband to one of the most famous women in the world—and he’ll tell you he willed them to happen by telling the Universe what he wanted.

“I truly believe in speaking things into existence,” says Cannon. “Not to get all Tony Robbins, but you speak it, and it can definitely happen to you.”  It may sound like so much New Age hokum, but it seems to be working.  After  garnering fame on Nickelodeon, Cannon landed a breakout role in 2002’s sleeper-hit Drumline. He was labeled the next Will Smith, but his follow-up films (2003’s Love Don’t Cost a Thing, 2005’s Underclassman) flopped. Rather than falling into straight-to-DVD obscurity, however, the former It boy has embarked on one of the more surprising second acts in entertainment industry. /meet Nick Canon: mini-mogul. “He could almost be a combo of Jay-Z, Dick Clark, and David Geffen,” says MTV’s President of Programming Tony DiSanto. Adding to his public profile, of course, his marriage to Mariah Carey, whom Cannon calls an “angel”. Says Carey, “He is probably the only person I know that matches me in drive and ambition.” And Cannon couldn’t be happier with phase 2 of his career. “‘I’m past my stage of wanting to be a star,” he admits, sitting behind his desk at TeenNick’s Times Square offices. “To be honest, I’ve always made more money behind the scenes.” (more…)

TeenNick Chairman Nick Cannon is Forever Young at 29

Wednesday, December 23rd, 2009

At 29, Nick Cannon has been a standup comedian, movie star, TV show host, comedy show star, producer and rapper – he may have Diddy beat for the title of mogul with the most hats.

Cannon has been working hard at his latest job, chairman of TeenNick – the younger version of Nickelodeon – that recently became a 24-hour network.

In an interview this week, Cannon talked about the TeenNick Halo Awards, what it’s like to be a network chairman, and trading ideas with his wife, Mariah Carey. But he’s already mapping out his next job after his entertainment days are over.

“I think after I accomplish what I want to in entertainment, then it’s philanthropy – try to make the world a better place,” says Cannon, nattily dressed in a gold-colored pinstriped suit.

He’s getting a head start with the Halo Awards. Instead of yet another awards show feting celebrities, stars like Justin Timberlake and LeBron James pay tribute to amazing teens doing amazing things. Alicia Keys and Hayden Panettiere also participate in the show, which premieres Friday (8 p.m. EST).

AP: It must have been hard deciding on which teens to honor. What made you pick out these kids?

Nick: The most difficult part about the Halo Awards was choosing only four recipients. I mean, we did our research and found hundreds and thousands of amazing teens, young people doing remarkable things in their community to uplift people and inspire people. To say that we whittled it down to four, I think we kind of created this squad across the nation of “Halo agents” … agents of change. These are just the first four you are going to see … it’s like the teen Nobel Peace Prize.

AP: What pressures do you have to deal with as chairman of TeenNick?

Nick: I don’t really recognize any of the pressures, to me it’s a fun job. I mean it’s definitely challenging to take a network to the next level and to wanna be in the same level as the MTVs and even the older Nickelodeon. … There’s definitely people watching me to see what I’m gonna do – “Is he gonna take this job serious? Is it just a vanity thing?” … There are those little things, but I don’t pay attention to any of that, I’ve just got to stay focused, keep my eyes on the prize.

AP: Do you feel that you have to prove yourself because so many artists have vanity projects? (more…)

Nick Cannon Launches Multi-Media Company, New Projects

Tuesday, December 15th, 2009

In an effort to centralize his many industry hats, Nick Cannon has announced today (December 15) the formation of NCredible Entertainment to handle his projects in TV, film, music, digital music, publishing and radio.

Cannon adds the NCredible CEO position with his role as Chairman/CEO of TeenNick, the 24-hour Nickelodeon network.

NCredible offices have opened in New York and Los Angeles, with a supporting cast of industry veterans in Ray Brown (Music Division), Tracy Nguyen (PR and Marketing), Dorian Graham (Television Division), and Cannon manager Michael Goldman.

First up for the versatile entertainer will be a currently untitled Hip-Hop puppet project for Adult Swim.

The show, which is said to hold similarities to HBO’s hit series Entourage, will revolve around members of a Hip-Hop group who live as roommates and struggle to become stars in the industry.

In partnership with MTV, Cannon’s NCredible collective has produced a docudrama pilot on Bronx emcee Cory Gunz entitled “Son of a Gun: A True Bronx Tale.”

Gunz is signed to Cannon’s label, and at press time additional episodes are being filmed.

Other music acts in development under the NCredible umbrella include R&B group RydazNRtist, Malibu Hip-Hop/pop star Colette Carr, and Trinidadian artist Aaron Fresh.

Cannon returns to TV on December 25 at the 26th Annual Disney Parks Christmas Parade with co-hosts Kelly Ripa and Ryan Seacrest.

The 2 hour ABC special airs at 10AM EST. On New Years Day, the entertainer will conduct his year end segment, “Nick Cannon Presents Hatin’ on ’09,” exclusively for MTV.

At press time, Nick Cannon’s early 2010 projects will be 6AM-10AM radio slot for CBS’ 92.3 Now (http:923now.com), and director duties for the Nickelodeon film School Gyrls, airing February 21.

Cannon Shot

Tuesday, December 15th, 2009

Nickelodeon has set a Feb. 21 premiere date for the Nick Cannon-directed movie, “School Gyrls.”

The movie, also written by Cannon (“America’s Got Talent“), will feature teen popsters the School Gyrls, discovered by Cannon, and guest appearances from Justin Bieber, Soulja Boy, Angie Stone, Pete Wentz and others.

It will premiere on Nickelodeon, then air on TeenNick the following night.

“For me, the movie has an appeal like ‘Glee,’ ” Cannon told The Post. “It has that poppy look but it’s a way to do a young teen musical that’s a little hipper than the ones you may have seen.”

In the movie, the School Gyrls (Mandy Rain, Jacque Nimble, Mo Money) play students at an exclusive all-girls academy who meet each other in detention, bond, and hatch a plan that unfolds at the school dance.

Nick: Mariah deserves a halo

Monday, December 14th, 2009

Nick did an interview with female teen magazine Alloy and also is candid footage from the screening at the Newseum in Washington, DC on Dec. 9, 2009.

Nick Cannon is no stranger to hosting and being in the limelight. But for one night, he’s giving the stage to four very special and inspirational teens at the Halo Awards. He scoured the country to find and surprise these motivational teens to give them the recognition they deserve. Keep reading to get more deets on this unique award show and find out who in his life he thinks deserves a Halo!

Tell us about the Halo Awards.
It’s where celebrities give awards to ordinary people doing extraordinary things in their communities or their world. It’s kind of flipping the whole awards show idea on its head and doing something that is extremely meaningful.

How did you come up with the idea?
I got tired of going to all these awards shows with just a bunch of celebrities kissing each other’s butts. There’s so much more going on in the world today. This age of change and this younger generation is what I was inspired by. And I think if I shed a light on young people that inspire me, maybe they can continue to inspire young people all across the world.

How’d you come up with the name?
We were just sitting around coming up with a bunch of different names and I was saying how the award is about young people helping and leading each other. And then halo, and what that word represents — it just kind of all clicked.

Is Beyoncé involved with the award in any way?
["Halo" is] an incredible song and it just fit perfectly, but that’s probably the only thing [she's involved with]. Maybe next year. This year, we got Alicia Keys and Justin Timberlake, so that’s cool. (more…)
